This is the first film that I ever made! It began as a project for a film class but it became something very special to me. We were given three guidelines as a starting point: the film needed to include sunglasses, fingers snapping and the line of dialogue “That settles it”.
When I began film school, I started to become very interested in the idea of fashion filmmaking. This refers to short videos (often intended to go viral) that feature the clothing line of a designer in very unique, highly stylized ways. These types of videos were the inspiration for my movie. That inspiration combined with my first fashion filmmaking experience have instilled in me a deep desire to turn this into a career—a lifetime of pursuing new ways of combining all of the wonderful elements of fashion with those of cinema.
Revelations is about a woman moving through both an emotional and physical space. The images act as metaphors for her journey, beginning in darkness and ending in self-awareness. I hope that you find something to connect with inside of this piece, and that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it!
Well, I ended up receiving the scholarship to study at the Nuova Accademia di Bella Arti in Milan! I was there for three weeks this summer, and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. The city opened my eyes to the world of fashion and design. There was no distinction made between architecture, furniture, food or clothing—in Milan, everything deserves to be given aesthetic attention. The people do not just wear clothing; what they wear is a statement of their identity, their nationalism and, most of all, an intricate form of art.
I took the following photos in the streets of Milan with a beautiful model named Alyna. I made the crown, which was inspired by the Duomo, the city’s cathedral. The opportunity to interact with a beautiful model in the city that I was genuinely inspired by helped me produce some work that I am very proud of. I hope that you enjoy it!
This is a collage piece I submitted for a scholarship to study fashion design in Milan, Italy this summer. I find out tomorrow if I got it, so I’m crossing my fingers tonight! The concept was based on a handful of particularly textural photos of mine from places I have visited around the world. With fashion on the brain, I envisioned a connection between these textures and fabric textiles. The piece was intended to illustrate the potential for fashion inspiration in the most unlikely environments.
I never considered myself to be a creative person. Now I attend an art school, and I’m still a little confused as to how I got here. Not in a million years did think I would be calling myself an artist. I actually don’t, just yet. But that is what I hope this blog will be about. A progressive transition into feeling like a creative, observant, fulfilled human being. So, to friends and family—and to anyone else who cares to follow me—this is the newest chapter in my life. Nikki Hall: The Artist. I named this blog “New Beginnings” because this is a fresh start for me; a rebirth of self-perception. Based out of sunny Santa Fe, New Mexico, I hope to discover my passions, inspirations, and creative potential.
Please leave me comments and criticisms, if you so desire! All work will be my own unless otherwise noted.
And the journey begins…
